I will admit it I use Audible so that I can “read on the go”. Well they had a ‘deal of the day’ earlier this week it was for Robert A. Heinlein’s “Have Space Suit—Will Travel”. Now I have read other Heinlein books one of which I enjoyed was Starship Troopers.
I didn’t know anything about Have Space Suit—Will Travel. All I knew was it was on sale, and it had a pretty cool outline.
First prize in the Skyway Soap slogan contest was an all-expenses-paid trip to the moon. The consolation prize was an authentic space suit, and when scientifically minded high school senior Kip Russell won it, he knew for certain he would use it one day to make a sojourn of his own to the stars. But “one day” comes sooner than he thinks when he tries the suit on in his backyard – and finds himself worlds away, a prisoner aboard a space pirate’s ship.
I picked up a copy to help keep me awake on a long car ride I had take (8+ hours). Not to give away any of the plot points but this book is by far one of the best books I have ever read this year. I love the slow pace and how something as harmless as winning a spacesuit can result in an adventure where the main character goes from being on earth to helping defend the human race from extinction.
From the research I did on this book after finishing it, this story was the last of the “Heinlein juveniles”. Right after this book was when he made adult Sci Fi novels like Starship Troopers, Stranger In A Strange Land, and To Sail Beyond The Sunset. All of which are great books.
I would highly recommend Have Space Suit—Will Travel, it is very addictive and once the ground work for the story has been made the book takes off at 100mph till you get to the end.
